Welcome

Welcome to our old farmhouse. Over the past year I have learned so much history of this house and the people who lived here. Ninety six years of love, loss, hopes and dreams. Preservation continues and there is always a repair to be done. We are trying to be purest in our preservation as much as we possibly can. I hope you follow along and each week I will try to give you a little history of the house as well as the first owners of the house. I've been lucky enough to find a journal from a Granddaughter who talks about the house as well as her Grandparents. So come follow along and learn about this old house as well as the occupants, old and new.

The Black Hole

I've been seeing all the gorgeous Fall decorating going on in blog land and had to start my own decorating. This is the only faux fireplace we have in the house and it's in the kitchen. I made it out of old barn wood given to me by a friend to somewhat match my old farmhouse table in the kitchen.
I also used it in my kitchen at our previous house. So like any fireplace it has the black hole. This is a painting I found years ago at a yard sale, I think I got it for about a $1.00 and it has beautiful colors for fall. I used it for several years and in different places, but never to cover the black hole.
So here she is, lots of orange, golds and browns. Oh the other brown thing you see there is of course is Copper, his nap time.

The feather wreath is from Micheal's and everything else on the mantle I have had for years.
The little plates are from a yard sale, the owner had the salad plates, cups and saucers, but no plates but for 10 cents each you can't go wrong. They also have lots of little brown and gold flowers around the edge. This is one of my favorite places in the house. A great little place to sit and have coffee, read or watch a little TV.  A great place for people to sit and talk to you while you cook since it faces the kitchen. This space is part of the original center hall of the house.

Bamboo

Back after a little break. So many things to do and so little time, trying to settle into the house.
I haven't been out that much lately, to any thrift stores or yard sales, but I did stop this week at a local thrift store and I found this cute little bamboo tray and stand. It's a little plain but I think I can spruce her up a bit. Not a bad buy for $10.00.

Take a good look at her now, because I have plans for her.
I think it could make a great little serving piece for the front porch.

Looks like it may have had handles at one time, something to think about.

Still Working The Dining Room

Well we are starting our third month in the house and I am still unpacking. Here are a few pictures of the dining room and yes some things are leaning towards the Fall side, but since I am unpacking and trying to find a home for everything, if something comes out of a box and works for Fall decorating I'm using it. So here is the view from the center hallway looking into the dining room. There are three sets of doors leading in and out, so furniture placement has been really hard. It's also a very hard room to get a photo of because it is so dark. The mahogany board and batten make it very dark even in the middle of the day. The wall paper was here, and I honestly haven't had a chance to do any painting. In our old house I used the formal living room as a music room and a library. Here I decided to have the formal dining room do duel duty, dining room/music room.
A view from the living room. My dining room table is pretty simple for now, just an arrangement, candlestick and a colorful  rooster.
The organ belonged to my husbands Grandmother and the table and sideboard I have had for years.
The room has a plate rail and  picture hanging molding that span the entire room, which is pretty neat, although I haven't had a chance to play with it allot. I still need to find a rug that will work for the room.
The fireplace side and sorry for the quality of the photo, but nothing helped to make it any better.
A little pottery and of course the harp. I'm still waiting on my musician to arrive to play it during dinner tonight (ha ha).
Thanks for stopping and be sure to check out the changes next week, that's just the way things have been going around here.

A Foyer In The Making

This was the view that greeted me on my first visit to this house, yes plastic chairs and a bed frame.
Now it's time for the metamorphose to begin.

So after lots of moving things here, then moving them there, I am somewhat satisfied, at least for the moment with the results. I used a library table I have had for years, some old books, and of course some pictures of the grands. The coal bucket was a thrift store find in fact I bought two for $10.00 each. This one I chose to put here and use it to hold my walking stick collection. I'm still looking for another container, but I just haven't found the right one yet.

A collection of walking sticks, my newest is the taller one in the center of the picture, and quiet the bargain at $3.00.
On a previous post I showed you this fringe I found at Habitat For Humanity for $6.00. there were 10 yards in the bag. So what did I use it for?
The chair covers in the foyer.
This was shortly after move in....

This is now.
I moved the little round fringed stool from the bedroom and like the look a little better.
I have two of these and I have used them everywhere. from the dining room to the bath room.
My next lucky find was this lamp globe, yes after ten years I found an original globe that fits. So for $2.00, I'm happy.
This little settee has been moved twice in the two months we have lived here. I first had it in one of the guest bedrooms and now it's in the foyer. This is another piece that's been everywhere, one of my favorite places for it is in the dining room, so don't be surprised if you see it somewhere else. Now here she is shortly after her move and...
Now
 Looking from the front door.
Hope you enjoyed my new treasures and my old ones.
I see I could use another rug or maybe a larger one, and a little less bright white paint.
What do you think?
A few of you have asked about wedding pictures, and I like you, still waiting. I should have them really soon. Thanks all of you for all your wonderful and thoughtful comments. I read everyone of them and I am working on answering everyone of them. Things are starting to settle down a bit, so now I can move the furniture again (ha ha).
See you soon.
